I have the honour to inform you that on

the 9th. instant Sergeant-Major Power of the Hongkong Volunteer

Corps was tried by the Police Magistrate on two charges of

ambezzlement of certain funds belonging to the Corps and en-

trusted to his care, and pleaded guilty. He has been sentenced

to six months imprisonment with hard labour.

The total amount ambezzled is $993.84. I

shall address you in a later Despatch with regard to further

action in the matter. Meanwhile steps have been taken to

engage a successor to Power, and on the Local Auditor's re-

commendation I have decided that he shall be required to enter

into a bond for $1,000.
